Against All Odds

Music always plays a big role in my novels. It inspires scenes, lines, and even entire story lines sometimes. One day while I was driving, “Against All Odds” came on the radio and I got the chills. This was Grace and Gabe’s song. I knew I had to incorporate this song into my book. This excerpt is that scene. I’ve also included the YouTube link to the song for your listening pleasure. 🙂 Enjoy!

from Running on Empty

Back at the Redbird Inn, later that afternoon, Gabe slid the piano cover open and ran his fingers along the smooth, worn, black-and-white keys. He had learned how to play music here with Grams looking on and listening. He played a few notes to get a feel for the instrument again. As he played, his mind drifted back to high school when he and Grace would sit here practicing whatever song they were working on at the time.

Automatically, his fingers started playing the old Phil Collins song “Against All Odds.”

He sang softly as his fingers traveled over the keyboard. He had convinced her to sing the song as a duet for the prom, hoping she would see how badly he was crushing on her. But she never had. She had left for New Orleans soon after that to attend the University of New Orleans on a music scholarship. He and Bennett moved to Austin, where there were more opportunities for musicians trying to make it big.

He sang quietly, still playing the old song, hoping Grace would take a look at him now.

“You’re still hung up on Grace, aren’t you?” Glinda asked from the doorway.

Gabe stopped singing, but not playing, his fingers still as restless as his mind.

“I am.”

She smiled and came to sit beside him on the stool. “What are you going to do?”

“I don’t know. I saw her on the beach this morning while I was fishing.”

“And?”

Gabe thought of the dark circles under Grace’s eyes. “I don’t know, Grandma. Something seems different.”

“Like what?”

“It’s a look in her eyes. I don’t know. I can’t put my finger on it.”

“Grace is a tough girl. She’ll make it through whatever it is. She does have that soft side though.”

He laughed. “Grace? Soft?”

“She is, Gabe. Look at her with Ryder, or Joey, or that crazy dog of hers. She doesn’t love easily, but she loves with all her heart when she does.”

He nodded and, suddenly feeling uncomfortable, was quiet.

“Gabriel?” Glinda asked, patting him on the knee. “Since you’re here, how about you help me out with some repairs around the place? A little hammering and nailing might be what you need to keep that mind of yours occupied. We can give Noah a little break.”

He smiled and mentally shook off the past. “Of course, Grams. Just let me know what you need.” He slid the piano cover shut and followed Glinda into the kitchen.

It’s Criminal

Image

Criminal Minds is absolutely one of my favorite shows. Hey, what girl wouldn’t love a show full of eye candy like Morgan, Rossi, Reid, and Hotchner? One of my favorite debates with other female fans is “Which one is the hottest?” I don’t think it’s ever been decided. 🙂

Not only is the cast easy to look at, the show is superbly written. Rather than being a show just about evidence, clues, and motivation, Criminal Minds delves deeply into the psychology of the criminal. It’s a roller coaster ride through insanity.

Along with the witty dialogue, the psychos, the cast, and the drama, there’s incredible music.  The lyrics and the music that goes with some of the scenes can be downright haunting at times. I could create a whole playlist simply based on tunes I’ve heard on this show. And probably will.

What are some songs I would include? Definitely these three awesome songs. Enjoy!

“Far From Home”  by Five Finger Death Punch

“Broken” by Lifehouse

“Hurt” by Johnny Cash

There’s so many more I could list, but these three have to be my favorites.  🙂

Here’s to great shows with great music!

Peace!

Rock the Halls

I’ve decided to have a little fun this morning and talk about my second love, music. I’m taking a little break from all the serious novel writing. I’m putting the revisions, the query letters, the revised synopsis aside for a moment.

Pretty much everyone is familiar with Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Or Elvis Presley’s “Blue Christmas.” But, where are all the really rockin’ Christmas songs? Mariah Carey is no Aaron Lewis. Sorry Mariah.

I did some research this morning and I’ve come up with some Christmas songs that would put any rock fan in the Christmas spirit.

1. Metallica “Carol of the Bells.”

(This song actually has been debated as to whether or not it is Metallica. Me? I just love it. And since it’s my blog it stays.)

2. U2 “Baby Please Come Home For Christmas”

3. Weezer, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”

4. Weezer, “O Come All Ye Faithful”

5. Aaron Lewis, “Silent Night”

Of course I had to fit Aaron Lewis in there! So, that’s a few songs for rock fans like myself to enjoy this holiday season. Know some I didn’t list? Feel free to add them. I’m always excited to listen to new music.  Want more ideas? Check out the links I have below.

For now, stay tuned. A hair band version of Christmas songs is coming up soon!

Peace and love this holiday season!

Play It Again Sam

Like most people, I am not a fan of remakes when it comes to music. If the original was good, leave it alone. However, every once in a while, a band will remake a song and it’s as good (if not better) than the original. Here are some of my favorites.

1. “Bad Company” Five Finger Death Punch

2. “Come Together” Godsmack

3. “Turn the Page” Metallica

4. “Behind Blue Eyes” Limp Bizkit

5. “Sympathy for the Devil” Guns n Roses

There’s just a few of my favorites. Check them out! And please, post some of your favorites, I can always do a part two!

Thanks readers, I am now over 16,000 views! Keep reading!

5 Great Love Songs for Rock Fans

Nothing melts my heart like a good love song. Especially a good ROCK love song. I’ll take  a good guitar solo and a rough-looking rock and roller over some Justin Beiber pop cheesiness any day.  Must be the lingering hair-band loving teen that’s still alive and well in my psyche.

So, what songs would I include if I were compiling a “Rock Love” CD?

1. “Everything Changes” by Staind

“Say that forever is more than just a word.”

Aaron Lewis is my favorite vocalist right now. I could listen to him all day long. The man has some pipes. That’s probably why he’s on my list of next ex-husbands. Which brings me to number two.

2. “Tangled Up in You” by Aaron Lewis

In this world
Where nothing else is true
Here I am
Still tangled up in you
I’m Still tangled up in you
Still tangled up in you

You’re the fire
That warms me when I’m cold
You’re the hand I have to hold
as I grow old.
You’re the shore
When I am lost at sea
You’re the only thing
That I like about me.”

Come on, what woman wouldn’t want a man to sing this to her?  It’s pure poetry.

3. “Far Away” by Nickelback

“Cause with you, I’d withstand all of hell to hold your hand.”

This is definitely a quality I’d want in a man.

4. “Broken” by Seether

“The worst is over now and we can breathe again
I wanna hold you high, you steal my pain away
There’s so much left to learn, and no one left to fight
I wanna hold you high and steal your pain”

You get two great vocalists on this one.  Would definitely like to see these two do more duets.

5. “Lifeline” by Papa Roach

“We tore down the walls I built around myself
I was struck by the light and I fell to the ground”

Definitely not your traditional love song here, but who ever said (or thought) that I was traditional.  🙂

So, there you have it. Five great love songs that melt my ever hardening heart.

Walking in a Music Wonderland

Every year, I make a Christmas wish.  It’s usually something a little cheesy. Okay, so maybe a lot cheesy, it is ME we’re talking about. This year, I’m changing it up. This year, I want something real.  I want to give myself the gift of music and travel. After all, these ARE a few of my favorite things.

I want to go to music festivals. They’re outdoors, there are multiple bands, and you get a road trip with friends (The more the merrier.)  What festivals do I want to attend to have myself a merry little year?

1. Edgefest

I went to Edgefest a couple of years ago and LOVED it! The tickets weren’t outrageously expensive, neither were the hotel rooms, and you got to see some BIG names. Godsmack and Rob Zombie were the biggest, and I have to say Godsmack ROCKED that festival!

2. Austin City Limits Music Festival

http://www.aclfestival.com/

3.  Bonnaroo

http://www.bonnaroo.com/

4. Rocklahoma

http://www.rocklahoma.com/

This one is usually a hairband lovers paradise! And since it’s so close to my parent’s house, I really don’t know why I’ve never made this one.

5.  BayFest

(The beach AND music!)

http://www.bayfest.com/index.php

Last year, the line-up was awesome! You could listen to Korn on one stage, and hear a country music headliner on another. Perfect for my split-personality music tastes.

6. Voodoo Fest

http://thevoodooexperience.com/2011/

Why I haven’t been to this one yet, I have no clue! It’s only two hours away!

7. Jazz Fest

http://www.nojazzfest.com/

Same with this one! No clue why I haven’t been to this one either.

With so many festivals on my list, I know that it’s probably impossible to make it to all seven. Unless I win the lottery and can quit my job. Ooooh, how nice would that be? I could travel to all six and blog my little heart out! (Santa are you listening?)

Now, all I need is a music festival partner in crime. LOL…..Any takers? I’m now taking applications.

For now, it’s off to work for me. Someone has to finance all these road trips!

Peace! I’m out!

The Songs of My Life #10

#10 “Scars” by Papa Roach”

One of my good friends gave her students an assignment last year that had me salivating. The students were to create the soundtrack of their lives. They started with selecting songs that represented different parts of their lives then wrote short essays explaining their choices. I so wanted to be in her class! Lol. Combine music AND writing? It’s Alisha’s idea of nirvana. Well, that and Orlando Bloom, Johnny Depp, and a can of whipped cream (or two), but I digress. As usual.

Since then, I’ve wondered what songs I would pick. I know I have a few in mind, but where do I begin? Do I begin in the beginning with “I was born”? Should I start at the end and work my way back? Or should I write in true Alisha fashion and bounce from song to song, time period to time period?

How about I begin with the present and start working my way back. And if I want to bounce around, well, I’ll just bounce around. It’s my writing. I’ll bounce if I want to.

I’ll start with “Scars” by Papa Roach.

“Alisha, can you……”

“Mom, I need…”

“Alisha, will you….”

“Mo-o-o-m, are you going to….”

“My weakness is that I care too much.”

I love to help people. I have taken in people who have no place to go. I’ve given money to people on the street. I’ve taken in just about every stray that’s crossed my path, human or animal. I’ve listened and tried to solve more problems than I can count or should be humanly possible.

What I’ve come to realize lately is when you become everyone else’s solver of problems, it leaves you with little time or energy to solve your own. Especially when some (not all) of those people who so depend on you to solve their problems or be there for them are not always there when you need someone yourself. It can become very one-sided.

“Go fix yourself.”

I’ve had a few days off lately and had some time to do some serious thinking. And sleeping (being everyone’s Superwoman can become exhausting.) I played hermit crab for two days. I realized that I’ve been giving too much of my energy away to those that don’t deserve it or don’t give back. And it’s something I’ve done all my life. I’ve got to let these people “go fix themselves”.

“I’m sorry but I’ve got to move on with my own life.”

This is the time for Queen Alisha. It’s time for me to be selfish. Time for me to take care of myself for a change. Time to concentrate on me and those that take time to take care of me in return. It’s time for me to get on with my own life.

It’s time.

Here’s to Papa Roach, “Scars”, and Queen Alisha

Cheers!

Better Than I Used to Be

Sunday, March, 20, 2011
29 days left
“I ain’t no angel
But I’ve been sitting out a few more dances with the devil.
And cleanin’ up my act little by little
I’m gettin there
I can finally stand the man in the mirror I see
I ain’t as good as I’m gonna get
But I’m better than I used to be

I’ve pinned a lot of demons to the ground
Got a lot of old habits licked
But there’s still one or two I might need you to help me kick
Standin’ in the rain so long has left me with a little rust
But put some faith in me
Some day you’ll see there’s a diamond under all this dust.”
-from Sammy Kershaw’s “Better Than I Used to Be”

I heard this song months ago, and cannot get enough of it.
Sometimes music just speaks to you. And this song definitely speaks to me. I’ve definitely had times in my life like this. I’ve definitely had to kick a few bad habits and wrestle some demons to the ground.

I was watching Criminal Minds, Suspect Behavior the other night and the characters were talking right before the episode ended. They were talking about ghosts. One character asked the other what he did with his ghosts. That character told him, “I make mine fly in formation.”

Demons, bad habits, ghosts, it’s all the same thing.

It’s how we deal with them that make us who we are. Do we let these things control us? Do we control them? There’s time I’ve controlled mine, and times they’ve controlled me.

I definitely prefer making mine, “fly in formation.”

And that’s what makes us better than we used to be. We live, we learn, we grow, we make mistakes, we dust ourselves off and get back to the business of living.

Speaking of which, it’s time I get busy living mine.

Here’s to becoming better than I used to be!
Peace!

My Next Ex-Husbands

Ok, before you get any ideas, I’m not trying to be another Liz Taylor. Nor am I planning on running off and becoming a groupie. Not that being a groupie hasn’t crossed my mind, being the rock star fan that I am. It’s simply not a possibility for me right now. This is simply something that has become a running joke between my friends and me. There are some lead singers out there that when I hear their sexy voices on the jukebox, I point to the jukebox and say, “That’s my next ex-husband.” Finally, one night, a friend of mine said, “Alisha, just how many ex-husbands are you planning on having?”

That’s a good question. So, I thought, and I thought. And finally, I came up with a number. My number? Five. Which makes six ex-husbands total, if you count the real ex-husband I already have.

Who are my next ex-husbands? Keep in mind these are in no particular order….

1. Sully from Godsmack

2. Jacoby from Papa Roach.

3. Benjamin from Breaking Benjamin

4. Aaron from Staind

5. Pete from Chevelle

Any of these guys can serenade me any day………

Peace!
